Schalke Rescue as Holstein Motivation

Listen to this article

Schalke’s relegation as a motivational boost for Kiel’s promotion race : Timo Becker, defender from Holstein Kiel with a soft spot for Schalke 04, is going into the second division clash against Fortuna Düsseldorf with a special incentive.

After the early rescue of his former club, the 27-year-old is now eager for what could be the decisive duel between his storks on Saturday (8.30 p.m. live on TV on SPORT1 and in LIVETICKER ).

“It might be a little easier for me if I don’t have to think about Schalke anymore,” said Becker with a wink on the side lines of a public Kiel training session on Wednesday. With a view to his youth club Schalke, he is “glad that the thing is over. And now the full focus is on Holstein, and then we’ll get the thing done on Saturday.” One point is enough for Holstein against Düsseldorf to be promoted to the Bundesliga on the penultimate matchday.

Becker and his teammate Steven Skrzybski recently caused a stir when they drove to Gelsenkirchen after a Holstein home game and stood in the Schalke fan block that same evening to support S04.

“Everyone knows that I follow Schalke,” said Becker on Wednesday: “I’m glad that they managed to stay in the league. Such clubs simply belong in the top two leagues. Great for Schalke, congratulations! But now I have to focus on us.”
