Rafael Nadal held on to reach his first ATP Tour semifinal round in two years by defeating Mariano Navone 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-5 in a grueling four-hour match Friday at the Nordea Open in Bastad, Sweden.
Nadal led 5-2 in the third set before Argentina’s Navone broke him twice to tie the deciding set at 5-5. But Nadal dropped just one point in the final two games to take the set.

The Spaniard last appeared in a semi-final at Wimbledon 2022. His opponent in Saturday’s clay-court semi-final will be Croatian qualifier Duje Ajdukovic, who defeated Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Nadal will get at least one more match on his favourite surface before competing for Spain at the Summer Olympics at Roland Garros later this month. He has won 14 French Opens in Paris.

Top seed Alexander Zverev of Germany overcame eighth-seeded Zhizhen Zhang of China 6-4, 6-3 to claim a quarter-final victory in front of his home fans.
In the semi-finals he will face Spaniard Pedro Martínez, who beat Argentine Francisco Cerundolo, the fourth seed, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Saturday’s second semifinal will feature a match between fifth-seeded Arthur Fils of France and third-seeded Sebastian Baez of Argentina. Fils defeated Denmark’s Holger Rune 6-4, 4-1, while Baez beat seventh-seeded Luciano Darden of Italy 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Greek top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas advanced to the semi-finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini in just 68 minutes.
Another Italian awaits him in the next round, sixth seed Matteo Berrettini, who defeated third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2).
Fifth-seeded Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany beat fourth-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. In the semifinals, Struff will face Frenchman Quentin Halys, who defeated Brazilian Gustavo Heide 6-1, 7-5 in a clash of unseeded players.
