As we move into the 2024/25 La Liga season, it is important to delve into some statistics to get a clearer idea of how the campaign is shaping up.
While Barcelona’s offensive prowess remains evident in topping the scoring charts, another important area worth examining is refereeing decisions, particularly those involving VAR (Video Assistant Referee).
The impact of VAR has become a major talking point in modern football, and this season will be no different. In fact, to date there have been 83 VAR interventions in LaLiga matches this season.
Sanction decisions have been the most frequently reviewed and represent 38 of these interventions. This is followed by incidents with goals (30 interventions) and red cards (15).
Barcelona leads the list
Among all the teams, Barcelona has experienced the greatest number of VAR interventions in its favor.
Up to eight decisions have gone in their favor, of which five have been due to the annulment of goals scored by their rivals.
This statistic stands out significantly compared to other teams in the league. Villarreal follows Barcelona on the list with seven favorable VAR decisions, while Athletic Club is in third place with six.
Curiously, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid are at the bottom of this classification, with only three favorable VAR interventions each, less than half of Barcelona’s total.
Meanwhile, Leganés remains the only La Liga team that has not benefited from any VAR intervention so far this season.
Regarding penalties, the action most reviewed by the VAR, Athletic Club takes the lead, having received four penalties through the VAR.
Osasuna follows with three. Barcelona, despite their overall favorable VAR statistics, have only been awarded a penalty via VAR intervention on one occasion.
These figures underline the varying impact of VAR between teams, as it not only shapes individual matches but also potentially influences league standings.
