FC Barcelona’s winning streak came to a halt over the weekend when the team drew 1-1 with Getafe. But the result could have been very different if the referee had awarded a penalty to the Blaugranas for an incident involving Jules Kounde.
The Frenchman, who scored the first goal, was brought into the area around the 80th minute by Christantus Uche.
Although the Barcelona players shouted for a penalty, their shouts were ignored by the referee and the VAR did not intervene either.
Earlier this week, Barcelona president Joan Laporta launched a scathing attack on the referee for blatantly ignoring the foul on Kounde.
Laporta’s last blow to the VAR for the Kounde incident
A few days after the match, it seems that Laporta is still resentful of the referee for ignoring the foul on Kounde that could have greatly altered the final score.
Upon arriving in Lisbon, in the run-up to Barcelona’s seventh UCL league match against Benfica, Laporta was harassed by journalists.
In statements to the media, Laporta reiterated the seriousness of the incident and once again urged the authorities to intervene.
“I don’t know if my statements have reached the arbitration body or not. What is clear is that the penalty against Koundé was very clear.” said (h/t Sports World).
Laporta apologized to referee González Fuertes for having played a ‘good’ game. But he was frustrated by the VAR team, who did not intervene at all.
“The referee was good in general. The VAR should have said something. “I should have intervened.” he concluded.
However, Laporta’s cries are unlikely to be heard as a lack of refereeing oversight and accountability has become common themes in La Liga.
Barcelona, unfortunately, has had to face the worst of it, as there have been many occasions where the blaugrana They have been aggrieved, simply due to lack of arbitration supervision.
