Barcelona will earn 24 million euros for the transfer of the former midfielder

Barcelona could earn an impressive €24 million if Porto decide to sell Nico González to Liverpool, and the midfielder is enjoying a successful spell in Portugal following his departure from the Catalan club, SPORT reports.

It’s no secret that Nico struggled to find his place in the Barcelona team, but he has thrived at Porto, becoming one of the Portuguese league’s standout players.

And now, his possible move could be one of the main deals of the next winter transfer market.

Liverpool are said to be interested in signing a midfielder and, having initially targeted Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, they have turned their attention to Nico amid the Spanish club’s refusal to let Zubimendi go.

Porto stands in the way of Barcelona

Interestingly, Porto are not currently open to negotiations, but with a release clause set at €60 million, they are within reach of Premier League clubs such as Liverpool.

The measure could occur in the January transfer market or in the summer, since the clause is still valid.

Barcelona sold Nico to Porto in 2023 for around €9 million, but retained a buy-back option of €30 million, which remains available until 2025.

What makes this situation especially lucrative for Barcelona is that they also have a 40% stake in any future transfers involving the player. If Liverpool go ahead with the deal, Barcelona will receive €24 million for their share of the transfer.

Meanwhile, other Premier League clubs, including Arsenal and Aston Villa, are keeping an eye on Nico’s progress, with it widely believed in Portugal that he will leave Porto in 2025, if not sooner.

Barcelona is closely monitoring the situation and former player Deco, who now works as an advisor, is well informed about developments.

This potential windfall would be a significant boost for Barcelona, helping to improve their team’s salary cap and furthering their long-term financial strategy.
