Barcelona failed to get three points back at home in La Liga last night as they succumbed to a 1-1 draw against Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.
It was Hansi Flick’s men who opened the scoring early thanks to Jules Kounde, but they soon conceded a rather sloppy equalizer and returned the match to a stalemate.
56 minutes full of drama and controversy later, the end of the game was whistled with the same score, although Barcelona did have a fairly clear penalty annulled, once again.
Barça Universal brings you three conclusions from Getafe 1-1 Barcelona.
The curse continues
Barcelona came into the game at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez without scoring at the stadium since 2019, when Luis Suárez and Junior Firpo helped the team win 2-0.
Last night, Hansi Flick’s team broke that curse early when a world-class pass from Pedri found Jules Kounde, who made no mistake in front of goal.
What they failed to do, however, was break the no-win curse at the stadium that has been active for exactly the same amount of time and will likely continue for another year.
Barcelona has not managed to beat Getafe at the Coliseum since 2019 and it is clear that it is a stadium that does not fit well with Barcelona’s style. Their poor record is solely due to the home team’s style of football.
Getafe’s only objective last night, once again, was to exaggerate challenges, go to the ground and waste time. They celebrated the draw as a victory and defended with nine men in the area, something that has become characteristic in recent years.
Barcelona will now have to wait one more year to have the opportunity to break the curse of the Coliseum. They were close, but it wasn’t meant to be.
Some positives to hold on to
You can argue at length about Barcelona’s inability to finish last night, now that they didn’t dictate the game like they usually do, and how certain players were a shadow of their former selves.
Credit where credit is due, however, some players representing the blaugrana The crest was magical last night and I was unlucky to be on the losing side.
Pedri, the clear man of the match, stood out on the field and was the only one who tried to create chances from the center of the field.
In 90 minutes, he created a big chance, racked up two key passes and completed 86% of his passes, all while playing as part of the double pivot. Defensively, he had ten defensive actions and anchored the field excellently after the substitution of Marc Casado.
Alejandro Balde was another player who played extremely well and maintained his positive streak of growth in 2025. Facing serious racist insults from the crowd, it was not easy for the Spaniard to remain calm, but he put in a special performance on the left.
Balde also has two key passes, one big chance created and just shy of 100 touches on the night and was untouchable down the left flank.
Lamine Yamal and Jules Kounde continued their magical combination on the right and looked to create a ruckus in the final third. However, players like Raphinha, Gavi and Lewandowski failed to get going.
The League is getting out of hand
“Win 6 of the last 24 possible points in La Liga? I’m not worried about that statistic. We are working well. Do we have to improve? Yes, we do. But I’m happy.” Flick said after Barcelona’s defeat last night.
Despite his words, however, it is well known that it is impossible not to shudder when looking at these figures.
Barcelona has added six of its last 24 points in La Liga, which means that it does not have a single point in each game.
The league can be a marathon with a lot of ground to cover. However, the title moves further away every day and it is clear that many things must change.
Indeed, Barcelona have proven to be ruthless in 2025 and have been extremely impressive in must-win, must-kill matchups. Their defeat against Getafe may well be a direct result of the opponent’s playing style, but that is no excuse given Barcelona’s situation.
With Atlético Madrid and Barcelona dropping points, this may prove to be just what Real Madrid needed to cement themselves as leaders of La Liga.
The same team that Barcelona beat 5-2 could be seven points ahead of them in less than 24 hours. Worrying days lie ahead in Barcelona’s league campaign.
