Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar praised Sanju Samson for his outstanding performances in T20Is over the past year. After years of inconsistency and limited opportunities, Samson made a strong comeback, becoming a key player in India’s T20 World Cup-winning team and hitting match-winning blows in bilateral series against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar highlighted how Samson’s run of games has finally allowed him to show his potential.
Samson has his moment
Bangar emphasized that constant opportunities have been crucial to Samson’s recent success.
“I am happy to see the kind of success he has been blessed with currently. It’s been there for a long time. It’s just that he gets the right opportunities and a good run of opportunities because every batsman, if he plays three or four games in a row, it frees him up a little bit,” Bangar said.
Samson, who has often batted lower down the order early in his career, thrived after being promoted to open the innings. He smashed centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa, strengthening his case for regular inclusion.
Six-hit prowess draws Yuvraj comparison
Bangar also drew a parallel between Samson and the legendary Yuvraj Singh, especially when it comes to six-hitting ability.
“When executing the order, you really don’t have to worry about the situation. The field is up and he has six hits. He can reach six with ease. After Yuvraj Singh, if there is a batsman who can do it so easily and consistently, it has to be Sanju Samson. So to see him firing on all cylinders is a pleasure to watch,” Bangar observed.
Samson ready to return to India
Samson is likely to be part of India’s limited-overs squad for the upcoming series against England. The series will be India’s first white-ball assignment since October last year, and Samson is expected to play a crucial role.
Since KL Rahul will be rested, Samson could also be called up in the ODI squad. His last ODI appearance was against South Africa in December 2023. With the Champions Trophy scheduled for February, Samson will be eager to make the most of his opportunities in the three-match ODI series.
