The decision has been made. Barring an unexpected turn of events, Eric García will remain at FC Barcelona, at least until the end of this season.
Neither the extension of Ronald Araujo’s contract nor the interest of Girona and Como in acquiring his services will cause the central defender to leave the club.
Hansi moves the key
Now, according to SPORT, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick played an integral role in ensuring Garcia did not leave this month.
The German coach prevented García from leaving last summer when Girona wanted him after his successful loan at the club.
The 24-year-old was considering a move, but Flick blocked his exit following injuries to Andreas Christensen and Marc Bernal, as well as Araujo’s continued absence. Now, the situation has developed in a similar way, several months later.
After being an important player during September, starting several games as a defensive midfielder, García was out for a few weeks due to an untimely injury.
The Spaniard’s return coincided with the recovery of other injured players, including Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and later Araujo, in addition to the good form of Marc Casado. As a result, his playing time decreased significantly in December and January.
This reduced involvement, added to the interest from Como and Girona, has led García to consider leaving in the current winter transfer market. But Flick has once again managed to prevent an exit.
How did Flick convince García?
According to the information, after the game against Benfica, when García came on as a substitute and scored a crucial goal, the player and the coach had a conversation.
Flick, just as he did in the summer, closed the door on any possible move, informing García that he could not allow him to leave.
The German strategist also expressed his confidence in the former Manchester City player and his satisfaction with his work both in training and on the field, as well as for his exemplary attitude in the locker room. All of this was enough to convince Eric to continue.
Flick does not want to lose García as he offers flexibility in multiple positions: centre-back, defensive midfielder or right-back. The door is closed on a move, but the situation will be re-evaluated in the summer and his contract expires in 2026.
