The Barcelona defender emerges as a key January target for La Liga rivals

According Sports WorldFC Barcelona defender Eric García is a key target for Girona, his Catalan rival, in the current winter transfer market.

Montilivi’s side are looking to strengthen their squad after having to deal with the demands of the UEFA Champions League campaign, and Barcelona’s versatile centre-back is part of their plans.

Lack of minutes for García

With Pau Cubarsi and Íñigo Martínez established as regular starters under Hansi Flick, Eric García’s playing time at Barcelona has been restricted this season.

Now that Ronald Araujo is back fit and Andreas Christensen is also expected to return soon, things won’t get any better.

Although García has also been deployed as a defensive midfielder, his prospects for meaningful minutes remain limited.

This situation makes him a potential candidate for Girona, where sporting director Quique Cárcel sees him as a valuable option for January.

Girona seeks the reunion of García

Last season, García performed at a high level while on loan at Girona from Barça. So much so that efforts were made to ensure its continued presence throughout the summer. However, injuries to Christensen and Araujo disrupted those plans.

Girona are now prepared to make another attempt to bring Garcia back, although they anticipate significant challenges in sealing the deal.

The complications are further amplified by Barcelona’s current struggles regarding the futures of Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor.

Girona’s approach would likely involve exploring a loan rather than a permanent transfer, making negotiations complex as Barcelona focus on generating cash income.

Girona coach Michel has been open about his desire to work with García again. The coach considers the defender a strategic reinforcement for the second half of the season.

Despite the obstacles, Girona remains committed to exploring the possibility of acquiring the services of the Barcelona defender.
