New Year: this is what to throw away before 2025 begins

With the start of the new year “just around the corner,” spring cleaning season is in full swing. Organize closets, cupboards and drawers It may not sound like the most exciting activity, but doing it now has multiple benefits. Rachel Rosenthal, organization expert and Post-it brand ambassador, says this is the ideal time to clear out clutter and start the year with more organized and functional spaces, she wrote in a column for southern life.

1.- Old decorations

There is no point in keeping boxes full of christmas decorations that you haven’t used in over a year. According to Rosenthal, these articles take up unnecessary space and are rarely used again. Getting rid of them will allow you to save decorations that will actually be used.

2.- Obsolete toys

Rosenthal suggests going through the toys accumulated in the house, especially those that children stopped using or what they have missing pieces. This process not only creates space for new gifts, but also reduces clutter. If doing it with children seems complicated, it is recommended to clean it when they are not present.

3.- Baking supplies

It is common to accumulate pastry utensils with the hope of preparing Christmas delicacies. However, if they have not been used all year, they are probably no longer needed. “Recovering that space in the kitchen allows for more efficient organization for items you actually use every day,” says Rosenthal.

4.- Winter accessories and clothing

The expert suggests reviewing winter clothes from the previous year and eliminating those that were not used or are no longer liked. This exercise, performed before the cold days arrive, helps maintain a functional wardrobe and free up space for new acquisitions.

5.- Items for occasional use in key areas

Don’t try to tackle the entire house at once, Rosenthal cautions. Instead, focus on the busiest spaces, such as the kitchen, study or guest areas. This strategic approach makes it easy to achieve visible results without feeling overwhelmed.

To make the task more bearable, Rosenthal proposes three key strategies:

Rosenthal emphasizes that carrying out a regular inventory of storage spaces is essential to maintain order. “It is a task that may seem overwhelming, but if planned properly, the process becomes much more manageable,” he states in the middle. His initial advice is schedule a specific date for cleaning and treat it as an unavoidable commitment. According to the expert, limiting the time dedicated to this activity, such as one hour instead of an entire day, helps avoid burnout and maintain motivation.

In addition, he suggests taking advantage of seasonal changes as a opportunity to order. Although she recommends doing it three times a year, cleaning before the New Year is, for her, the most important. “It is a way to evaluate what you have, free up space for the new and start the year with clarity”explains.
