Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh is all set to return to the Big Bash League (BBL) after almost three years. He has been added to the Perth Scorchers squad for their next clash against the Melbourne Renegades at Optus Stadium on Tuesday. Marsh’s return is a huge boost for the defending champions as they prepare for the crucial final stretch of the season.
Marsh returns to the mix
Mitchell Marsh last played in the BBL in January 2022 before ankle surgery ruled him out of action for a long period. The procedure was intended to help revive his testing career and it worked. Marsh made a stunning comeback by smashing a memorable century during the 2023 Ashes at Headingley. However, after a quiet series against India, he was left out of the team for the final Test at the SCG.
Returning to the Scorchers, Marsh brings experience and firepower to the squad. If he doesn’t make the cut for Australia’s upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, he could be available for the rest of the BBL season.
The Perth Scorchers have received another big boost with the return of fast bowler Jhye Richardson. Although he was part of Australia’s squad for the last two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar series, Richardson did not get a chance to play. Now he is back with the Scorchers, ready to strengthen their bowling attack.

Test stars rejoining BBL teams
Several other players from Australia’s Test team are expected to return to their respective BBL teams. Travis Head, however, has confirmed that he will not be part of the Adelaide Strikers’ campaign.
“I’m gutted,” Head told Fox Cricket after the SCG Test. “I don’t know what I’m going to do in the next few days, but we have 10 or 12 days off before we go to Sri Lanka, and I’m going to take advantage of every moment.”
Big names like Steven Smith (Sydney Sixers), Usman Khawaja (Brisbane Heat) and Alex Carey (Adelaide Strikers) are expected to play in the upcoming BBL matches before embarking on the Australian tour of Sri Lanka. However, their availability for the BBL Finals remains up in the air as they are likely to leave early for a pre-tour camp in Dubai.
Australia’s hectic cricket schedule is leaving players with hardly any time to rest. As soon as the BBL concludes, the national team will head straight to Sri Lanka for a multi-format series, starting with a training camp.
