Earlier this week, former Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font gave an extensive interview in response to Joan Laporta’s interview in which the club boss spoke about the registration saga, the club’s financial situation and several other key topics.
During the interview, Font attacked Laporta, stating that the team’s situation with the current board was worse than that of Josep Maria Bartomeu.
Not only that, but Font also targeted sports director Deco, for the signing of Vítor Roque, accusing him of irregularities, which has now led the Portuguese to consider taking legal action against Font, according to SPORT.
What did Font say?
In fact, Font questioned Deco’s signing of Roque, stating that he had already offered the Brazilian to Barça before (as an agent) but was rejected, only to sign him as soon as he became director.
“We had Marc Guiu, there was no fair play and we signed Vitor Roque. “If we saw that he was the new Ronaldinho, we understand it and we prioritize talent, but it is evident that he does not have the characteristics to play for Barça.” -he began.
“Deco had offered it to the club when he was its representative. Jordi Cruyff and Mateu Alemany said that there was no fair play and that it was not a priority. The first thing Deco did was sign Vítor Roque as soon as he arrived.” he added.
Vitor Roque arrived at Barcelona from Athletico Paranaense for a fee of 30 million euros, plus 31 million euros in add-ons, in January 2024.
Although the transfer was seen as a long-term investment, the Brazilian barely featured under Xavi Hernández. Hansi Flick also did not seem convinced of Roque’s current ability to play at the highest level for Barcelona.
This motivated Roque’s loan to Real Betis for two seasons in the summer, where he is doing well.
Deco’s stance
It is important to note that Deco has never represented Vitor Roque, since the player’s agent has been André Cury, a consolidated representative in negotiations with Brazilian players at Barcelona.
Deco has firmly stated that he did not offer Roque to the club. While Cruyff and Alemany initially considered the transfer, they decided not to go ahead.
Deco, who had closely followed Roque and seen him play live, finally took charge of the signing, even though his predecessors had worked on the agreement months before and almost reached an agreement.
Deco has now demanded that Víctor Font retract his statements. If you refuse to do so, Deco is willing to take legal action in this regard.
