Erling Haaland has been a goal for FC Barcelona for a long time. The Catalans were very present in his signing in 2022 before moving to Manchester City and have maintained interest even after.
In fact, as has been reported in recent months, the Norwegian striker was one of club president Joan Laporta’s dream targets to replace Robert Lewandowski as Barcelona’s main center forward in the coming seasons.
There were plans to make a move for the 24-year-old this summer or in 2026, thanks to a release clause in his contract with Manchester City.
Haaland signs new deal for a decade
However, Barcelona’s hopes of signing Haaland in the short term have been dealt a blow as the Norwegian hitman has committed his long-term future to Manchester City.
In fact, as reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Haaland has signed a new nine and a half year contract with Manchester City that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2034.
Under the terms of the new deal, all buyout clauses were removed from the previous contract, while the 24-year-old was handed a contract that is touted as “one of the most lucrative deals in the history of the sport.”
When this contract expires, Haaland will be 34 years old and will enter the final phase of his career.
Despite reports of a possible move to Spain, the centre-forward is said to be very happy at Manchester City and the long contract signed is proof of this.
Fabrizio Romano, however, mentions that there is a termination clause in Haaland’s new contract, but that it will only be active from 2029 and in a very high number.
This essentially rules out any chance of Barcelona making a move for Haaland in the near future, with the Catalans now likely to shift their focus towards alternatives such as Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres.
