Barcelona were expected to play the second half of the season at Spotify Camp Nou, saying goodbye to the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic and returning to their original home.
Renovations at the Spotify Camp Nou, however, have not gone as planned and the delay has pushed the date of a possible reopening beyond April.
Ideally, the stadium would only reopen next season when the renovation is almost complete.
However, the Montjuic Stadium will not be available beyond May due to commitments to host other events and therefore puts Barcelona in a dilemma.
A new option
Barcelona’s current agreement with the company BSM and Barcelona City Council allows the club to use the stadium until the end of March.
As revealed Sports WorldJoan Laporta and company have planned a key meeting later this week to secure the rights to use the stadium until the end of April.
They hope that the one-month extension will give Camp Nou enough time to at least reopen with a capacity of 60,000 spectators and take over in the final stretch of the campaign.
Barcelona is optimistic that its stadium will be ready for the last stretch of the season and that the second Classic of La Liga and a possible UEFA Champions League semi-final can be played at the Camp Nou.
If BSM gives the green light, Barcelona will play Real Betis, Celta Vigo and Mallorca in Montjuic in April and the hope is that they can return home after that.
However, possible quarterfinals and semifinals of the Copa del Rey are expected to be held in Montjuïc.
It should be noted that UEFA will not pose any problem for Barcelona to change stadiums mid-season, since its rules only stipulate that the league phase must be played in a single venue. Once in the round of 16, they may move to an alternative venue.
