Barcelona is currently in a complicated situation having not met the registration deadline for Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor.
After the lost registrations, the club could face a loss of 263 million euros.
However, that has not stopped the club from pursuing its short-term goals, which is to find a contract renewal deal for some of the star players, including Frenkie de Jong.
De Jong and Barcelona resume negotiations
According to Diario AS, Barcelona have resumed contractual negotiations with the Dutch midfielder for a new deal.
This comes against a backdrop of intense tension between the two parties, with Barcelona already fearing that the midfielder will opt to run out his contract and then leave for free in 2026.
In recent months, de Jong has struggled to re-establish himself as a regular starter in the first team under Hansi Flick.
The Dutchman has fallen behind the likes of Marc Casado and Pedri in the pecking order, leading to a reduced status within the team.
But after a period of tension, it seems that Barcelona and De Jong have brought their positions closer and are willing to talk about the new contract.
Barcelona has a clear situation, which can later represent a bottleneck for negotiations. Although sporting director Deco is willing to offer De Jong a new contract, this could lead to a significant reduction in the player’s salary.
This, sooner or later, may create problems for De Jong, who is currently among the highest earners not only at Barcelona but also in La Liga as a whole.
It should be noted that De Jong’s agents consider a salary reduction acceptable. However, the extent of the reduction could greatly influence the outcome of the talks.
Barcelona’s game plan is clear: put pressure on De Jong and prevent the midfielder from leaving the club on a free transfer.
