Younis Khan will be Afghanistan’s mentor for the 2025 Champions Trophy

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been appointed as the mentor of the Afghanistan cricket team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This is Younis’ second season with the team. He previously served as their hitting coach in 2022.

Official confirmation from the ACB

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the news on Wednesday.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, ACB spokesperson Sayeed Naseem Sadat shared details about the appointment. “The ACB has appointed former top-level experienced Pakistani player Younis Khan as a mentor for the Champions Trophy 2025. He will join the team before the event begins in Pakistan,” Sadat confirmed.

The Champions Trophy will begin on February 19. Afghanistan’s first match will be against South Africa on February 21 in Karachi.

A legendary career

Younis Khan’s cricket credentials are nothing short of legendary. Over a remarkable career, Younis Khan scored 10,099 runs in 118 Test matches. His highest score was a stunning 313 against Sri Lanka. Younis also has more than 7200 runs in ODIs.

Apart from his batting achievements, Younis holds a special place in Pakistan cricket history for leading the team to its first T20 World Cup victory in 2009. He remains one of the most respected figures in world cricket.

Training and experience periods

Since retiring from international cricket, Younis has taken on various coaching roles. He briefly served as batting coach for the Pakistan national team, imparting his wisdom to the next generation of players.

His coaching background also includes stints with Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and a head coaching role with the Bangla Tigers in the Abu Dhabi T10 League. Younus has great knowledge of Pakistan’s countryside. Afghanistan has recently performed very well at ICC events. With Younus at the helm, Afghanistan would hope to reach the knockout stage.
