Day 1 of the Sydney Test witnessed a painful moment for Washington Sundar as India battled Australia’s ferocious attack. The incident occurred during the 66th over of India’s first innings, with Pat Cummins delivering a lethal bite that left Sundar writhing in agony.
While trying to block the shot, Sundar misjudged the trajectory of the ball, resulting in a direct hit into his area. The impact was strong and forced him to collapse on the pitch. India’s physiotherapist ran onto the field as the all-rounder struggled to recover from the excruciating pain. Fans and players watched anxiously as Sundar lay on the ground, clearly uncomfortable.

A controversial exit for Sundar
Despite his valiant attempt to continue, Sundar’s stay was short-lived. A delivery later, Cummins bowled a short ball which Sundar tried to pull. Australian goalkeeper Alex Carey immediately appealed, convinced the ball had grazed Sundar’s glove.
The Australians reviewed the decision and the technology showed a slight spike as the ball approached Sundar’s glove. Following the third umpire’s instructions, the on-field umpire overturned the original decision, dismissing Sundar for 14 runs off 30 balls. The decision sparked frustration, with Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah openly questioning the inconsistency, referencing a similar incident in the previous game.
Bumrah strikes back
After Sundar’s controversial dismissal, Bumrah channeled his frustration into action. The Indian captain smashed three consecutive boundaries off Scott Boland, injecting much-needed energy into India’s innings. Bumrah’s spirited reply offered a ray of hope as India struggled to recover at 148/8.
The SCG pitch, with its lively grass cover, proved to be a rhythm lovers’ paradise. Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Scott Boland made life difficult for the Indian batsmen all day. With the bowlers dominating, India’s hopes now rest on their own pace attack exploiting similar conditions in the second innings. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj would hope to pull off similar antics with the new ball.
