Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar thanked head coach Gautam Gambhir and support staff after his breakthrough performance in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. In the post-match press conference, Sundar shared that it was his belief that boosted his confidence and helped him play better.
“Very happy, honestly. Gauti Bhai [Gambhir] “And the support staff continued to believe in me,” Sundar shared. “They reminded me what I am capable of, especially at this level. That means a lot. It made me believe that I can do special things for India in this format.”
Stable partnership with Nitish Reddy Lifts India
Sundar’s hard-fought fifty came at just the right time, helping India recover from a tough situation. His 127-run stand with young batsman Nitish Kumar Reddy was a game-changer. Sundar reflected on his innings and admitted that he could have done more.

“It was a good day, but it could have been better. I wish I had scored more runs and stayed longer. But yes, we are in a good position now,” he said.
He fell to Nathan Lyon after going for a heavy hit, but his effort steadied the ship. Reddy’s unbeaten 105 added further stability to India’s innings.
Sundar further spoke about the challenges of playing Australia on their own turf. “Playing here in Australia is always tough. You are always under pressure,” Sundar admitted.
Nitish Kumar Reddy steals the show
However, Nitish Kumar Reddy with his maiden century stole the limelight of the day. He reached the milestone in 171 balls. At just 21 years and 216 days, Nitish Kumar Reddy is the third youngest Indian to score a century in Australia, joining legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Rishabh Pant.
Australia’s bowlers, led by Pat Cummins and Scott Boland, made their presence felt, taking three wickets each. Nathan Lyon contributed two. Still, the Indian batsmen showed grit. The day’s play ended early due to poor light and rain, with India at 358/9. Reddy (105*) and Mohammed Siraj (2*) will resume on Sunday.
