The fifth Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground began on an emotional note. Australian opener Usman Khawaja wore a black armband as a touching tribute to Melissa, the late wife of former South African cricketer Ashwell Prince. Melissa recently passed away after a battle with cancer and Khawaja’s gesture was a heartfelt way to honor her memory.
Khawaja’s gesture was a poignant reminder of the links cricket weaves across borders, with players supporting each other during personal tragedies.
A tribute to Melissa Prince
The death of Melissa Prince left the cricket fraternity in mourning. Ashwell Prince, who represented South Africa in 66 Tests and 52 ODIs, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, accompanied by a touching tribute to his wife.
“It was extremely difficult to have to see you endure as much pain as you did in the last few months of your life. But we choose to remember you the way we knew you. “A gem, one of those rare guys who touched people’s hearts in a special way wherever he went,” Prince wrote.
Her words reflected deep pain and love, capturing the profound impact Melissa had on those around her. “We miss you mom and we almost can’t believe you’re gone. But you have left a mark on all our hearts that can never be erased. Happy new year my love. Rest in peace up there, your children will always love you!
Khawaja’s short stay at the crease
After India were bowled out for just 185 in their first innings, Usman Khawaja stepped in to open for Australia late on Day 1. But his time at the crease did not last long. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah sent a strong delivery that caught the edge of Khawaja’s bat, sending him back to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs off 9 balls.
While his batting performance was quiet, Khawaja’s tribute had a bigger impact. That black armband said more than the runs or the wickets ever could.
