Unreal catch of Charith Asalanka fires Rachin Ravindra in Hamilton

Charith Asalanka took an absolute blinder to send Rachin Ravindra packing during the second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. In the match, played at Hamilton’s Seddon Park, the hosts attempted to close out the series, while Sri Lanka fought tooth and nail to stay alive.

Shaky start for New Zealand but Ravindra held firm

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner decided to bat first after winning the toss. But things didn’t start well as Will Young was back in the hut in the fifth over, leaving the Kiwis reeling from the start.

Then came Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra to steady the ship. The duo added 112 runs, bailing New Zealand out of trouble. Ravindra, in particular, seemed to be batting on a different pitch: fluid, composed and in control.

Asalanka’s magical moment changes the game

Everything seemed to be going in New Zealand’s favor until Charith Asalanka stepped forward. In the 23rd over, Wanindu Hasaranga bowled one which Ravindra tried to play off the back foot. It was not timed and the ball went high into coverage.

Asalanka, situated under cover, read it perfectly. He jumped at just the right moment, snatching the ball out of nowhere. The Hamilton crowd couldn’t believe it, and Ravindra, advancing to 79 off 63 balls, could only return shaking his head.

That catch changed the game. Ravindra was in top form and his dismissal gave Sri Lanka a real chance of pulling off an upset.

Ravindra’s form is a big boost for New Zealand and CSK

Despite the heartbreak of having to leave, Rachin Ravindra’s form is one of the biggest positives for New Zealand at the moment. He smashed 45 for 36 in the first ODI and followed it up with a classy 79 in this game.

With the ICC Champions Trophy just around the corner, New Zealand will be delighted to see him firing on all cylinders. And it’s not just the Kiwis who are keeping an eye on it – Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fans will be excited too. Ravindra is likely to open or slot in at number 3 for CSK in the upcoming IPL season. If you take this form, it will be a game changer for them.
