After the announcement of the extension of the Ronald Araujo contract, the approach in Barcelona has changed Frenkie de Jong.
The contract of the Dutch midfielder in Camp Nou expires in the summer of 2026, which means that next summer it could be the only time Barcelona can have the opportunity to get something out of his sale.
That is, of course, provided that Jong does not renew his contract in Catalonia, realizing the worst fear of Barcelona.
Negotiations at a dead point
According to a new Sport report, Barcelona’s negotiations with Jong have not advanced at all.
The two parties are not on the same page, and the entourage of Jong, in particular, has not shown any indication or desire to renew the existing contract.
The Barcelona plan with the extension of the De Jong’s contract is to reduce the player’s salaries while giving the club a form of influence, which they can use when selling the midfielder.
But it seems that De Jong continues to disagree with the Barça administration and it will be surprising to see that anything changes in the short term.
Porta not crossing the red line
The report adds that the president of Barcelona, Joan Laporta, has established a strict red line: no player can train next summer with a contract that expires in the same season.
There are players like Eric García, Pablo Torre and Inaki Pena, who could face that situation. But his contract scenario is not as complicated as Jong.
Taking that into account, Barça may have to make a decision in the near future, whether to terminate the Jong’s contract and relieve the club of his high salary or expect the midfielder to change his mind and unexpectedly firm a contract.
The report indicates that Jong has finally overcome the physical challenges he faced since he returned from an injury. It remains to be seen whether or not that helps to be restored as a regular of Barcelona.
