Raphinha has enjoyed a magnificent turnaround this season. From being a secondary player to Xavi Hernández, the Brazilian has become an offensive axis for Barcelona, under the leadership of Hansi Flick.
Flick’s trust in Raphinha has been well rewarded by the player, who has been involved in 31 goals in just 29 competitive matches this season.
In light of his brilliant performances, Raphinha, in a recent interview, spoke about the early challenges of his career and his mental health.
Raphinha on the challenges in Barcelona
Raphinha spoke about his comeback at Barça, especially now that he is one of the team’s leaders.
“I have always been a fighting person, I have always sought to give my best on the field” said the attacker (h/t SPORT).
“The truth is that I feel very happy and privileged to be able to say that I am one of the captains of Barça. In fact, if you had asked me last season if it was something I expected, I would have said no.
“At that time, on an individual level, I didn’t feel confident, I wasn’t consistent in my games.” he added.
Raphinha also spoke about the fact that his struggles in Barcelona forced him to seek health as he faced challenges regarding his mental well-being.
“Due to the difficulties I went through, I ended up looking for a professional who could help me understand what I was feeling. This season the confidence has changed and the mindset has changed. “I am living the best moment of my career.” revealed.
This is not the first time Raphinha has spoken about his mental health challenges, as the forward has also been very open about it in the past.
Raphinha on the early challenges of his career
The former Leeds United striker went on to reveal some of the early career challenges he faced due to his lack of physicality.
“I was very small and very thin. “They said I didn’t have the strength, that I didn’t have the size to compete and I think that gave me the strength to fight and show that I don’t have the size or the strength to compete,” said.
Speaking about how his past Brazilian teammates motivated him, Neymar added: “I remember seeing the great Brazilian idols. Seeing what they did on the field was spectacular.“
“I think that was also a motivation to follow my dream of being a professional footballer.” he concluded.
