Barcelona president Joan Laporta is in a crucial phase of his mandate as reports emerge about his standing among club members and potential challenges ahead.
According to journalist Santi Giménez via AS, Laporta continues to enjoy strong support from Barcelona members, largely due to his ability to guide the club through some of its most turbulent times.
However, a possible failure in Dani Olmo’s handling of the situation could pose a significant threat to his leadership.
Laporta has always finished the job
Laporta’s reputation as a problem solver has been the cornerstone of his presidency. In his first term he managed to sign Memphis Depay thanks to Gerard Piqué’s decision to accept a salary reduction.
The following year, he found a way to obtain the registration of Jules Kounde through guarantees from the board and resolved Gavi’s status with an injunction.
More recently, he worked miracles with Joao Félix and Joao Cancelo, securing their registration through additional guarantees.
This year, Andreas Christensen’s injury allowed Olmo to participate after missing the first two games due to registration issues.
Olmo’s case is crucial
Despite these successes, the current challenges surrounding Olmo’s record could greatly influence Laporta’s final year in office. With his term set to end in 2026, opposition figures are beginning to gain momentum.
Thus, Víctor Font has made himself heard in recent months, while other potential candidates, including Camprubi Montal and Jordi Termes, are making their presence known.
Termes, especially linked to the Bizum platform, has raised doubts about Laporta’s leadership, adding fuel to the political contest that is brewing.
Meanwhile, Xavi Vilajoana, a pre-candidate in the previous elections, is expected to announce his candidacy soon.
While individual opponents may struggle to compete with Laporta’s charisma, a unified opposition could create the most formidable challenge he has faced during his tenure.
