The Barcelona coach faces a serious selection dilemma in defense before the clash against Atlético de Madrid

Barcelona’s defensive lineup for their upcoming clash against Atlético de Madrid raises several questions, particularly about who will partner Íñigo Martínez in central defense.

While the uncertainty surrounding Lamine Yamal’s potential replacement is understandable, it is equally important to consider the situation at the heart of Barcelona’s defence.

One key figure who could feature is youngster Pau Cubarsi, who was benched during Barcelona’s final match against Leganés due to a combination of factors.

His mistake, which led to a penalty against Dortmund, along with some questionable tactical decisions, left him out.

Despite this, there is a strong chance that the talented youngster will start in the next match, although Hansi Flick has other defensive options to choose from.

Eric García proved a point

To begin with, García was solid in his performance against Leganés, despite being involved in the goal conceded from a set piece.

He played 74 minutes and showed good form throughout. Although Garcia has had a difficult time at Barcelona since leaving Manchester City, his return to full fitness has given Flick a reliable additional option at the back.

If he starts, he will provide a constant presence in defense, along with Íñigo Martínez, against a formidable Atlético.

Then there is Araujo.

On the other hand, the inclusion of Ronald Araújo continues to be a riskier option. The Uruguayan has not appeared since the summer and it may be too early to start him in such an important match.

However, he has been training with the team for several weeks and his natural aggression and stamina could make him an asset if he is brought in as a substitute.

His pace and strength could be useful if Atlético coach Simeone opts to bring in a physical striker like Alexander Sorloth.

More mobile players like Antoine Griezmann or Julián Álvarez could test the defensive capabilities of Cubarsi or García, who could adapt better to their style of play.
