2024 has been a very special year for FC Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal as he has cemented his status as the best young footballer in the game.
The 17-year-old winger won the Golden Boy award and the Kopa Trophy this year and also finished in the top 10 for the Ballon d’Or.
Barcelona sees adolescence The Masia gem as an untouchable part of the team for the present and future and as such, they are keen to tie him down to a long-term contract.
Lamine’s current contract runs until 2026, but reports have suggested there is already an agreement with the player and his agent, Jorge Mendes, over an extension until 2030 once he turns 18.
Jorge Mendes issues update
Speaking recently at the Globe Soccer Awards, Jorge Mendes gave an important update on Lamine Yamal’s contract renewal situation at Barcelona.
After praising the winner of the 2024 Golden Boy, the super agent confirmed that the young prodigy will indeed sign a new contract with the blaugranaalthough he did not reveal when it will happen.
“The truth is that Lamine was phenomenal last season. For me and for many others he was the best player in the world last year, both with Spain and with Barcelona.” said Mendes, quoted by Tuttosport.
“He is a totally different player from the others: he knows what he needs for his future, he is a balanced guy and I think he is prepared to be at the top for many years.”
“Now he is recovering from an injury, he has to be patient and he will be back with the team soon.” he added, referring to Yamal’s recent injury.
On the subject of his contract, Mendes said: “If he will renew? Surely he will do it soon, he has to continue at Barcelona. “I can’t tell you if it will renew in one or two months, but it will undoubtedly happen.”
Having all but secured contract renewals for Pedri and Gavi, two most integral members of Barcelona’s set-up, the Catalans appear to have Lamine’s situation under control as well.
