Barcelona fans have little to complain about after the Spanish Super Cup final as they humiliated arch-rivals Real Madri 5-2 on their way to lifting the trophy.
But one negative moment of the night that did cause more tension than necessary was the expulsion of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
The veteran goalkeeper’s ill-timed tackle in the second half, where he extended his leg further than necessary and knocked down Kylian Mbappé on the edge of the area, earned him the red card after a VAR control.
Szczesny will serve his one-match suspension tomorrow in the Copa del Rey match against Real Betis.
Szczesny talks about the red card
Following the red card, Szczesny, who won his first trophy with Barcelona months after joining the club, took to social media to express his opinion on the incident.
“Yes, I made a bad decision and I was expelled my first time. The Classic!” Szczesny admitted. “Yes, it’s not a particularly pleasant feeling. But experience allows me to see things from a different perspective.” he added, reflecting on his career at the highest level.
Commenting on the drastic change in his life, as he went from being retired to playing a Classic final shared:
“In September I retired from football and was enjoying my life on the beaches and golf courses of Marbella. 4 months later I was able to play a game that before I could only watch on television or play on FIFA.”
Szczesny does not hesitate to admit his mistakes, no matter how important they are. In his statement he revealed:
“And I was never going to hide and play this game afraid to make tough decisions and take risks. One would think that it was that attitude that caused my red card.” said.
“I prefer to think that it is precisely this attitude that led me to be where I am now and it is thanks to my sometimes irrational courage that I can now enjoy my first trophy as a Barcelona player.”
“Living your life without fear can sometimes hurt you, but believe me, you will get an amazing adventure in return! I love this game! Long live Barça“ he concluded.
The red card caused a brief moment of uncertainty when Barcelona conceded a goal after a shot from Rodrygo, bringing the score to 5-2. Fortunately for Flick’s team, it was only a fleeting scare as they held on to lift the first trophy of the season.
