Sunil Gavaskar predicts Rohit Sharma’s retirement after Sydney test

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has taken the cricket world by storm with his latest prediction. According to Gavaskar, Rohit Sharma may have played his last Test match. The Indian skipper opted to rest during the decisive fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Sydney. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah once again took the reins, as he had done previously in Perth.

Gavaskar’s thoughts on Rohit’s future

Speaking during the lunch break on Star Sports, Gavaskar expressed his belief that India could be leaving Rohit behind in Test cricket. “Well, I think what it probably means is that India doesn’t qualify for the final of the World Test Championship. To me, it looks like the Melbourne Test would be Rohit Sharma’s last match,” he said.

This is India’s last Test match in this WTC cycle. Post this, India has no Test matches until June. And if India fails to qualify for the World Test Championship final, Gavaskar advised the selectors to invest in young talent. “The new cycle of the World Test Championship will start in the England series, so they will look to have someone available for the 2027 final,” Gavaskar added.

He also hinted that Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of selectors, could have influenced the decision to rest Rohit for the Sydney Test. “At the end of the day, he is also part of the selection committee,” Gavaskar explained.

Ravi Shastri’s take on Rohit’s retirement

Former India coach Ravi Shastri echoed similar sentiments. He pointed out Rohit’s age and the need for a transition. “If there was a home season ahead, I might have thought about continuing, but I think I might just pull the plug at the end of this test,” Shastri said on Star Sports.

Shastri highlighted that Rohit, at 38, might find it difficult to continue at the highest level. “It’s not that India doesn’t have young players. There are some very, very good players on the wings, and it’s time to build,” he explained.

India entered the Sydney Test trailing 1-2 in the series and needed a win to keep their World Test Championship hopes alive. With Rohit opting out, the focus was on Bumrah and the team’s ability to handle the pressure in the decider of this series.
