Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment at not being invited to join Allan Border during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy presentation ceremony. Australia clinched the series 3-1 after defeating India by six wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Australia secures historic series win
Australia finally got their hands on the coveted Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a resounding 3-1 series win. The victory at the SCG marked the end of a ten-year drought for the Australians, who had not won the title since 2017. Pat Cummins led his team to victory as they easily chased a target of 162 runs on Day 3 of the final test.

However, while Allan Border was invited to present the trophy to Cummins, Sunil Gavaskar was left on off-stage media duties.
Gavaskar wanted to be part of the presentation
Speaking to Code Sports, Gavaskar expressed his disappointment. “I certainly would have loved to be there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India,” he said.
The former Indian captain clarified that the outcome of the series did not influence his desire to be part of the moment. “They played better cricket, so they won. Alright. Just because I’m Indian doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be there. “I would have loved to present the trophy to my good friend Allan Border.”
A special bond with Allan Border
Gavaskar and Border share a long-standing friendship, dating back to the MCC Bicentenary celebrations in 1987. During those matches, both legends played for the Rest of the World team against MCC.
“I am very fond of AB (Border),” Gavaskar shared in an earlier interview with the Indian Express. “We really bonded during that tour, traveling and playing matches together. It was a wonderful experience.”
The cricket icon also expressed his pride that the series was named after him and Border. “I feel honoured, privileged and blessed that the series between India and Australia bears our name. Such an iconic series… it’s a blessing.”
Australia’s comeback after an initial setback
Australia’s series victory was complete, but it was not without its challenges. India got off to a good start by winning the first Test in Perth. However, the hosts roared back with a resounding 10-wicket victory in the Adelaide pink-ball Test.
The third test at the Gabba was interrupted by rain and ended in a draw. But Australia took advantage of the crucial moments in Melbourne, sealing a series lead before finishing in Sydney.
