Ronald Araujo’s future at Barcelona is at stake. The Uruguayan international has become Juventus’ main target in the current January transfer window.
Barça, for its part, intends to retain its vice-captain and has been trying to renew his contract which expires in 2026.
While his efforts had so far proven futile, there were hopes that the 25-year-old’s situation would change following the recent injury to Inigo Martínez, who will be out for at least a month.
Araujo did not get carried away
However, according to journalist Alex Pintanel, even after Martínez’s injury, Araujo has communicated to the Barcelona management his determination to leave during the winter transfer market.
The Uruguayan international has received public support from club president Joan Laporta and coach Hansi Flick. His teammates have also been trying to convince him to continue, as was seen after the Spanish Super Cup final.
Despite this, Araujo remains firm in his decision to leave, with Juventus being the most likely destination.
Negotiations are expected to be complicated, as Barça has no intention of letting him leave cheaply. The Italian giants plan to offer around €50 million, but Barça could demand a higher fee.
Although discussions between Araujo and Deco continue, the defender’s future points increasingly further away from Barcelona.
Where does this leave Barcelona?
Martínez’s absence due to injury, which could span eight games, combined with the possible departure of Araujo, leaves Barcelona with few defensive options.
He blaugrana He will welcome Andreas Christensen back from injury later this week, while it could also mean more minutes for Eric Garcia, whose exit will likely be blocked, in the coming games.
Youngster Sergi Dominguez will also be an option for Flick, while he can also turn to Jules Kounde, who has been playing exclusively at right back this season.
