Rohit Sharma to retire from Test cricket after Sydney Test

It looks like Rohit Sharma might be preparing to say goodbye to Test cricket. According to a report in the Times of India, the Indian captain is expected to announce his retirement after the ongoing series against Australia.

The BCCI and selectors are said to be already aware, and it doesn’t seem like Rohit is thinking any better. While the exact timing of the announcement is unclear, it is expected to come after the final test in Sydney.

That said, there is a slim chance that he will stick around for one last hurrah if India reach the final of the World Test Championship (WTC).

A tough race for the captain

The ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy has been quite a disappointing run for the Indian captain. In six innings so far, he has managed just 31 runs. To put this in perspective, Jasprit Bumrah has taken 30 wickets in the same series. Yeah, it’s been that kind of stretch.

After India’s big loss in the fourth Test in Melbourne, Rohit spoke about how things have been weighing on him. “A lot of the things I’m trying to do aren’t adding up,” he said. “It is disappointing, without a doubt. Mentally, it’s disturbing.”

As captain, it’s been a mix of things

Rohit also opened up about his leadership struggles and admitted that the results have not been what he expected. “Few results have not been favorable. “As a captain, that is disappointing,” he said.

But more than the team’s problems, it is his personal form that seems to bother him the most. “If you come here with the goal of success and things don’t go well, it’s a big disappointment,” he added.

It’s clear that Rohit is taking this personally, as any passionate player would.

What’s next for Rohit and team India?

All eyes are now on Sydney. For Rohit, this could be his last Test match and he will want to come out on a high. It may not be the farewell that Rohit Sharma dreamed of, but he will certainly want to say goodbye with one last impactful performance.

For India, the stakes could not be higher. They need a win to keep their faint hopes of reaching the World Test Championship final alive. If they don’t make it, this series will go down in history as one of missed opportunities and hard-learned lessons.
