Nathan Ellis, the Chennai Super Kings recruit for IPL 2025, took one of the best catches in BBL 14. The impressive catch came during the BBL clash between Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers.
A catch that defied belief
In the 10th over, the Strikers were chasing their target and Matthew Short was attacking the Hurricanes ferociously. Located in the center of the game, Ellis had a different strategy. Waqar Salamkheil bowled a high and slow ball. Short moved forward to hit him hard, but missed in the moment of his blow. The ball rose high and Ellis initially misjudged its trajectory, causing him to run backwards.
However, he remained focused on the ball. As he fell, Ellis jumped and caught him with both hands as he fell to the ground. The crowd erupted in amazement at the spectacular catch, which gave the Hurricanes a vital lead and changed the momentum of the game in their favor.
Hobart’s towering total sets the stage
Early in the match, Hobart posted a commanding total of 214/5, with Ben McDermott leading the charge. McDermott’s dazzling 68 off 34 balls included three sixes, and he broke his bat after reaching the second maximum. After scoring it, McDermott continued to hit power shots, helping Hobart record the only 200+ point total of the season and the fourth-highest score in team history. Despite losing early wickets – Mitchell Owen (8) and Caleb Jewell (22) – the Hurricanes were boosted by McDermott and Tim David (33), who added 88 runs in the last six overs.
The Strikers, led by Overton’s 2-27, fought back with some key drives but Hobart’s impressive fielding and explosive batting made it difficult for Adelaide to catch them.
The forwards’ big push falls short
In reply, the Strikers got off to a good start, with Captain Matt Short (52) and D’Arcy Short (41) forming a spectacular 76-run partnership. Ollie Pope added 39 and Overton chipped in with a quickfire 30 not out. However, the Strikers couldn’t keep up with the runs.
When Matt Short reached his 14th half-century in the BBL with a huge six, it looked like the Strikers could pull off a thrilling chase. But then came Ellis’ remarkable catch that sent Short back to the locker room and swung the game in Hobart’s favor.
A series of impressive fielding efforts
The Strikers’ chase continued to unravel as Tim David made a stunning flying catch to dismiss Alex Ross (8), and Ollie Pope fell meekly to a reverse ramp shot from Chris Jordan. It seemed as if the Hurricanes’ fielding and bowling were always one step ahead.
The final blow came when Overton tried to reduce the damage with a series of boundaries, but it was not enough. The Strikers finished with 203/6, falling short by 11 runs.
