Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has praised Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy after the youngster’s exceptional performance in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Playing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Reddy showed his bravery and talent with a brilliant first Test century.
Although India lost by a margin of 184 runs, Reddy’s aggressive 114 off 189 balls was a silver lining. Batting at number eight, the 21-year-old showed remarkable composure against a relentless Australian bowling attack as he took India’s first innings total to 369.
“Reddy is a genius,” says Clarke
Clarke could not hide his admiration for Reddy’s potential. “Reddy, this young man who bats at number eight, is a genius,” he said.
The former Australian captain suggested a promotion for Reddy in the batting order. “I think he definitely has to hit seven, if not six,” Clarke said.
“He has been India’s leading run-scorer, 21 years, unbelievable. “He’s been underrated throughout the series.”
Reddy’s versatility impresses Clarke
Clarke highlighted Reddy’s versatility and composure and termed him a complete package. “He has impressed everyone. He has not feared any Australian bowler. He has been patient when he has needed to be patient. He has batted very well with his tail. He has shown his intention. He bats, he bowls and he fields,” Clarke added.
With the final Test of the series scheduled to begin at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on January 3, Clarke believes Reddy deserves a bigger role. “I think he is good enough to bat at number six. So what a great option for India going into the final Test match,” the 43-year-old said.
Australia’s win at the MCG has given them a 2-1 lead in the series. For India, Reddy’s stellar performance is a rare bright spot as they aim to level the series in Sydney. His consistent performances throughout the series have cemented his place as a rising star in Indian cricket.
