Jasprit Bumrah is making headlines again, and for all the right reasons. The Indian pace wizard is the clear favorite to bag the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024. After an absolutely crazy year, he has left fans and critics in awe.
Joining Bumrah on the nomination list are England’s Joe Root, rising star Harry Brook and Australia’s reliable Travis Head. While they all had brilliant seasons, Bumrah has been operating on another level.
A year to remember for Bumrah
Let’s say 2024 was Bumrah’s playground. The man got 86 wickets in just 21 matches! To put that into perspective, the second best on the list, Wanindu Hasaranga, has 64 scalps and played 30 games. Oh, and Bumrah took five five-wicket hauls just for good measure.
What’s even more impressive is how he has been India’s go-to person across all formats. He topped the Test cricket charts and during the T20 World Cup, his performances were nothing short of magical. It is no exaggeration to say that he played a pivotal role in India lifting that trophy.
In the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah has been an absolute nightmare for the Australian batsmen. With 30 wickets in just four matches, he left his nearest competitor, Pat Cummins, far behind with just 20 wickets.
If his bowling was not enough, Bumrah even shined as captain. He led India in Perth when Rohit Sharma was unavailable, and boy did he deliver! Not only did he crush him with the ball, but his leadership was also spot on. India destroyed Australia for 290 runs in that game, with Bumrah pulling all the right strings.
The competition
Bumrah has some tough names on the nomination list, but let’s face it, none of them have had a year like his.
- travis head: The Australian batsman has been a constant rock for his team.
- Joe root: England’s golden boy in Tests, as reliable as ever.
- Harry Brook: The young English batsman has been a revelation, especially in red-ball cricket.
They have all been fantastic, without a doubt. But Bumrah? He’s just been on another planet this year.
