Irfan Pathan mocks Mitchell Starc’s ‘Flipping Bails’ ritual at MCG Test

On the third day of the Boxing Day Test between India and Australia, a funny incident occurred. Former Team India cricketer Irfan Pathan jokingly mocked Mitchell Starc for trying to get away with throwing bails.

Starc caught throwing bails

Starc was trying to improve his luck by doing the “flipping the bails” ritual. This involves changing bails in hopes of turning the tide in your favor. Many players have tried this ritual and Starc thought it was worth trying as well.

It was a routine popularized by former England pacer Stuart Broad during the Ashes, and has since become popular among other bowlers, including India’s Mohammed Siraj and Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne. Starc had had no wickets in the game. Therefore, he tried to do the ritual of flipping the bails to change his luck.

Pathan noticed Starc’s attempt and couldn’t resist making a light-hearted comment and a bit of humor in the face of serious competition. Pathan quipped: “Even though Australia is in this position, if you have to remove bails, Mitchell Starc is thinking about himself because he doesn’t have a wicket.” This comment caught attention on social media, especially because Starc was changing the bails and put a comedic spin on the match.

Starc’s gesture bears fruit

Starc’s superstitious act seemed to pay off as just one later, Nathan Lyon bowled a brilliant delivery that trapped Ravindra Jadeja in front of the stumps. Jadeja, who had been steady for India, was awarded LBW after scoring 17 runs off 51 balls.

Although Starc played a role in Jadeja’s dismissal, his own performance was poor. The left-arm fast bowler completed 21 overs without taking a single wicket. He then appeared to be in pain and consulted with the team’s physiotherapist, raising questions about his physical condition. However, he was a threat to the Indian team throughout the day.

Later in the innings, Reddy almost gave Starc a breakthrough when he hit an aerial shot off Mitchell Marsh. However, Starc was unable to convert the half chance into a catch. Reddy grabbed this opportunity by scoring his first Test century and getting India out of a terrible situation.
