Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) are gearing up for a new chapter in the IPL 2025 season, but their captaincy situation has sparked widespread speculation. After launching Faf du Plessis before the mega auction, the franchise is looking for a new leader. While reports have linked Virat Kohli with the captain’s job, RCB head coach Andy Flower is keeping his mouth shut.

“Well, you’ll have to wait for the result. We are entering a new era, the beginning of a three-year cycle. “I’m sure the anticipation will keep things interesting for you,” Flower said. “You can ask me as many times as you want, but that communication hasn’t happened yet.”
RCB’s auction picks for IPL 2025 have left fans intrigued, especially since Kohli is the most obvious choice for the captaincy. Speculations also circulated about Rajat Patidar taking over as leader, but Flower clarified that no decision has been taken yet.
Kohli’s current form and future prospects
Virat Kohli, who recently featured in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has had a mixed run with the bat. He scored 190 runs in five Tests and will soon be seen in action in the upcoming ODI series against England, starting February 6.
Kohli remains pivotal to RCB’s plans. The former captain has been a cornerstone of the franchise, leading it to two IPL finals. However, the elusive title remains missing from RCB’s trophy cabinet. With a strong team, the franchise hopes to break the title curse in the next season.
Building a powerful lineup for IPL 2025
Under the guidance of Andy Flower, RCB has put together a formidable batting line-up. His strategy in the mega auction focused on strengthening the batting order with power hitters and versatile options. Flower hinted at a more aggressive approach this season.
“There were two really obvious areas that we felt we needed to address, and we’ve drafted hitters with a lot of power,” Flower said, discussing the team’s bidding strategy.
Opening pair to watch: Kohli and Salt
One of the key talking points for RCB in IPL 2025 is their potential opening partnership. Flower suggested Phil Salt could join Kohli at the top of the order.
“If you look at the potential line-up, Phil Salt, known for his aggressive opening prowess, could partner Virat Kohli at the top,” Flower said.
Kohli, retained for INR 21 crore, will likely continue to open the innings for RCB. He had a stellar IPL 2024 season, winning the Orange Cap with 741 runs. Salt, acquired for INR 11.50 crore after an impressive stint with KKR, adds firepower to the starting pair. The Englishman’s aggressive style complements Kohli’s consistency, making them a formidable duo.
Middle order stability with Patidar and Livingstone
Rajat Patidar, retained for INR 11 crore, is expected to occupy the crucial number 3 spot. Patidar has been a revelation for RCB, scoring consistently in the last two IPL seasons. His performances in domestic cricket have also been notable, making him a potential future captain of the franchise.
Liam Livingstone, bought for INR 8.75 crore, adds depth and versatility to the middle-order. Although his last few seasons in the IPL were disappointing, his ability to clear boundaries and contribute with the ball makes him a valuable asset. His international form has been promising and RCB will be counting on him to rise to the occasion in pressure situations.
Lower Middle Order Firepower: Jitesh Sharma and Tim David
To strengthen their lower middle order, RCB acquired Jitesh Sharma and re-acquired Tim David. Both players bring finishing power and adaptability to the team.
“Jitesh Sharma is an exciting young wicketkeeper-batsman who has been notable in the domestic circuit. He brings an exciting dynamic to our side,” Flower said.
Jitesh, bought for INR 11 crore, is expected to bat at number 5. His finishing ability, demonstrated in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he scored at a strike rate of 225.00, makes him a key in high pressure situations.
Tim David, bought back for INR 3 crore, is likely to take over at No. 6. Known for his powerful batting and experience in T20 leagues across the world, David’s role in the death overs will be crucial for RCB’s success. His familiarity with the franchise, having debuted for RCB in 2021, increases his value.
