Speculation is rife about a possible leadership change in the Indian ODI cricket team, with Hardik Pandya emerging as a strong contender to replace Rohit Sharma as captain. Hardik’s ability to handle high-pressure situations and his stellar record in ICC tournaments have strengthened his case for the top job.
Rohit Sharma’s ODI future under scrutiny
Rohit Sharma, who is currently rested for the final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), handed over the reins to vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah for this match. However, sources suggest that Rohit’s exclusion might not be a rest issue but a management decision after his lackluster performance in the last three Tests, where he managed just 31 runs.
Amid these developments, reports have emerged suggesting that Rohit’s absence from the ODI leadership could soon become permanent. The ongoing SCG Test could mark the final chapter of his Test career, and if he leaves the ODIs, Hardik Pandya is seen as the favorite to take over.
BCCI source backs Hardik Pandya
An anonymous BCCI source reportedly shared insights on the leadership prospects, stating:
“Hardik has the ability to lead in high-pressure situations, and his experience as a leader and all-rounder makes him an ideal choice for an ICC tournament like the Champions Trophy.”
The source ruled out other candidates including current T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill for the ODI captaincy position. According to the source:
“Gill needs more coaching to mature and become a leader, and SKY’s performances in ODIs have not been convincing enough. “Hardik remains the most balanced option to lead India in ODIs if Rohit is not available.”
Hardik Pandya’s leadership record
Hardik Pandya has shown glimpses of his leadership skills in international cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL). He has captained India in three ODIs and has achieved two victories. While his tenure as captain of the Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 was not ideal, his achievements with the Gujarat Titans tell a different story. Under Hardik’s leadership, the Titans reached two IPL finals and clinched the championship title in 2022.
