Barcelona won its fifteenth Spanish Super Cup title by beating Real Madrid 5-2 last night.
It was a terrific performance from the Catalans, who had to endure multiple setbacks, including an early goal from Kylian Mbappé and a second-half red card for goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Barcelona’s players, however, reacted brilliantly and, in an efficient performance in the final third, scored no less than five times.
Flick speaks after Barcelona’s victory
In statements to the press after Barcelona’s victory, coach Hansi Flick was, to say the least, euphoric.
“We played a great game. Today is a day to be positive and optimistic. The team is incredible. The players already feel that we are a great team. I can only congratulate the team.” Flick told the press (h/t Sports World).
“We always stayed together. We defended and attacked together. That’s what’s important. That was the key. The goal is to learn from each game and improve day by day.” he added.
Barcelona’s victory last night marked the team’s first title under the leadership of Flick, who did acknowledge that the team made some mistakes.
“I like to have a team that plays a specific style, the way we play is important. We made some mistakes today and that’s what we have to reduce. When we have the ball everything is easier.” said.
Speaking about Szczesny’s red card, the German added: “It is not easy to play with 10 against
Real Madrid. We have two fantastic goalkeepers. We defended as a team.
“Because we discussed the changes that had to be made after Szczesny’s expulsion and they went well.”
Hansi Flick continued to offer his opinion on the path ahead, now that he has won his first title in Barcelona.
“I have been in this world for many years. The objective of the big clubs is to win titles and that is why we work hard. Now we have to show in every game how good we are.” said.
Finally, Flick explained what he told his team after Mbappé’s early goal, which put Barcelona behind in the first five minutes.
“I am proud of the players, of all the staff, of the fans. It was good for us to come back after Mbappé’s first goal. We did things well and it was incredible.” he concluded.
