India’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy campaign has been far from ideal. They are currently losing 1-2 in the series and the chances of qualifying for the WTC finals look very slim. After the defeat at the MCG, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar criticized senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. He has openly questioned his future with the Indian team.
A disappointing show in Australia
Both Kohli and Rohit entered the series with sky-high expectations. However, neither man managed to step up, leaving fans and selectors alike disheartened. Rohit’s leadership and Kohli’s batting, cornerstones of the team, have been criticised. Gavaskar’s assessment was blunt and unvarnished.
Talking about Kohli’s problems, Gavaskar pointed out a recurring technical glitch. “The foot does not go towards the ball. He goes straight to the field,” he explained in an interview with India Today. “When that happens, you are forced to deliver from outside, which increases the risk of errors.”
This observation gets to the heart of Kohli’s repeated dismissals in the series. Despite trying hard, Kohli has not been able to adapt to this issue.
Selectors in the spotlight
Gavaskar did not limit himself to technical criticism. He also focused attention on India’s selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, urging them to make tough decisions about the team’s senior players.
Rohit Sharma to retire from Test cricket after Australia series: reports
“The contributions from the top order have been below expectations,” Gavaskar said. “If the higher order doesn’t work, you can’t blame the lower order for the team’s failures.”
Rohit, already facing retirement rumors, is in a particularly precarious position. Sunil Gavaskar has clearly stated that seniors should not be guaranteed a place in the Indian team based solely on their reputation.
A call for accountability
Gavaskar believes India’s problems in Australia are largely due to the poor performance of their experienced batsmen. “The higher order has not done its job. That is why India is in this situation,” he said.
He also highlighted the responsibility that veteran players have in crucial phases. “All they had to do was get through the day and take the fight to Sydney,” Gavaskar said.
