Former Barcelona midfielder talks Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, La Masia, El Clasico

Ilkay Gundogan recently appeared on his first Indian podcast when he appeared on The Ranveer Show, hosted by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia.

During the course of the podcast, Gundogan offered his opinion on multiple topics, including the two products of Barcelona’s academy, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi.

But, above all, Gundogan spoke about his time as a Barcelona player and what it was like to play in the Classic.

Gundogan on playing in Classic

“I saw the last Classic when Barça won 4-0. “It is one of the most important football games you can watch and I will continue to watch it from afar.” said.

Speaking of the first Classic played, added the midfielder, “It was an incredible feeling to score in my first Clásico. I wish we had won that game, because I feel like we lost it in a completely unnecessary way, and that was the frustrating part of the game.

During his brief time at Barça, Gundogan played three games against Real Madrid, but ended up losing in each of the three.

Gundogan shares story about Lamine Yamal

Continuing, the Manchester City star shared an interesting story about Lamine Yamal, who had to run to the bathroom in the middle of a match.

“Last season we played against Porto and we were winning 1-0 and everything was going well.” Gundogan was startled.

“In the second half, in the 60th minute, we suddenly started to suffer. I felt that the opposing team improved a lot as if they had an extra player..

“After 10 minutes I found out that one of our players left the field and went to the bathroom! It was Lamine.” said.

The midfielder revealed that Yamal did indeed have to go to the bathroom and did not return in time, which led to his substitution.

“Lamine was an important player so the coaching staff did not want to replace him immediately, so they were waiting for his return.

“When I found out, I said, ‘Guys, what’s going on? We played with 10 men! Don’t you want to make a substitution? In the end they had to make a change because they waited a long time for him and he didn’t come back.”he added.

Gundogan on Cubarsi and The Masia

Gundogan also shared his opinion on Pau Cubarsi, the other The Masia talent that is causing a sensation in European football at the moment.

The young Spaniard has become a regular in Barcelona’s first team, overtaking Ronald Araujo in the pecking order, making the Uruguayan international’s future uncertain at the club.

“Before Cubarsi started with the first team, I watched him in training and it was clear that he had a lot of talent.” Gundogan said.

“I was surprised because when I came in I didn’t know him, I thought he was 20 or 21 years old because he seemed mature and had a strong personality and his decisions were like those of a 25-year-old player.

“I was talking to one of Xavi’s assistants and he told me that he was only 17 years old and that’s when I was shocked.” he added.

Finally, the German midfielder praised The Masia for consistently producing such great talents.

“I feel like there is something very special about La Masia. The way these kids grow and learn, I don’t know the exact details because I didn’t live it, but I saw the results in training.” said.

“If you look at the history of Barcelona you will see that the team has always had a lot The Masia players, along with other more experienced players, whether Spanish, Catalan or foreign.

“I think that mix is what has always made Barcelona a special team, and The Masia “It is a very important part of the club’s identity.” he concluded.
