Barcelona had a near-perfect night on Sunday in Jeddah when they thrashed Real Madrid 5-2 to win the Spanish Super Cup.
The only smudge marks for the blaugranas That night saw an injury to key defender Iñigo Martínez, which ruled him out for five weeks, and the red card shown to goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.
Wojciech Szczesny will miss the Copa del Rey match against Real Betis
As a result of his red card, Wojciech Szczesny will serve his suspension in the next Copa del Rey match against Real Betis in Montjuic, reports Sports World.
This means that the Polish goalkeeper will be available for Barcelona’s League match against Getafe next Saturday.
The expulsion occurred in the 57th minute when referee Gil Manzano, after a VAR review led by Iglesias Villanueva, determined that Szczesny’s tackle on Kylian Mbappé outside the penalty area denied a clear scoring opportunity.
The incident was recorded in the official match report as follows:
“In the 57th minute, the player (25) Szczesny, Wojciech, was sent off for the following reason: for knocking down an opponent while contesting for the ball, thus preventing a clear scoring opportunity.”
Previously, these suspensions were served exclusively in the same tournament, that is, having been sent off in the Spanish Super Cup, Szczesny would have had to serve the suspension in the same competition.
However, the rules were modified to ensure that players serve their sanctions immediately, even if they do not participate in the tournament again. Article 56, point eight, of the guidelines for the execution of sanctions of the Disciplinary Code establishes:
“The suspensions derived from the Spanish Super Cup, whatever their severity, will prohibit the players from participating, acting or accessing the playing field, bench and locker room area during the number of matches covered by the sanction, in the order in which occur, even if schedule modifications, postponements, replays or other circumstances change the pre-established scheduled competition schedule.”
As a result, Szczesny will not be available for the Copa del Rey match against Betis, but will return for Barcelona’s La Liga match against Getafe, where coach Hansi Flick will be able to count on him once again.
