Barcelona star defender feels he should earn more amid contract standoff: report

Ronald Araujo has had a disappointing 2024/25 season so far, marked mainly by injuries. His absence from the field of play has not only affected his personal performance, but has also caused a significant change in the power dynamic within Barcelona’s defense.

With Araujo out, players like Íñigo Martínez and Pau Cubarsi have taken a step forward, becoming the ‘big bulls’ of the Barça defence.

Martínez has played at a spectacular level under Hansi Flick, while Cubarsi has cemented his place as a full member of the first team.

Even amid such consolidation, Barcelona, albeit unofficially, has maintained that it wants to renew the contract of star player Ronald Araujo.

Renewal talks face obstacles

However, a recent report from Diario AS has offered a new perspective on Araujo’s contract negotiations with Barcelona.

It seems that the positions between the club and the player remain distant, mainly due to salary disagreements.

Araujo, who is not currently among Barça’s highest earners, believes that his performances in recent seasons justify a significant salary increase, an opinion not entirely shared by the club’s management, which calls for financial prudence.

This situation is further complicated by Barcelona’s negotiations with other key players such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Gavi.

Araujo feels ignored and is not willing to settle for less when he sees that his teammates are prioritized.

With his contract expiring in June 2026, and with his sights set on the Premier League and Serie A, Araujo’s future at Barcelona is at stake. Not to mention, the club have also been linked with a summer move for Jonathan Tah.

The next few weeks, to that end, could prove critical as Barcelona look to make a crucial decision regarding the future of one of their star defenders.
