Barcelona reach full agreement with club captain on new contract: report

The situation surrounding Ronald Araujo at FC Barcelona has experienced a dramatic turn over the last week.

At one point, it seemed that the 25-year-old Barça captain would leave the club for Juventus, although Íñigo Martínez’s injury did not change his mind either.

However, a conversation with sporting director Deco convinced the Uruguayan international to turn around and stay with the Catalan team.

Not only that, the renewal talks between Araujo and Barcelona have also progressed quite quickly in recent days, to the point that the renewal could be announced next week.

Total agreement reached

Previous reports had suggested that Araujo’s contract extension was close to being finalized after a meeting between the defender’s agents and Barcelona took place earlier in the week.

It was stated that some final details needed to be ironed out before the deal could be definitively closed.

Now, José Álvarez in El Chiringuito TV Reports that Araujo and Barcelona have reached a total and complete agreement on his renewal.

With a full deal in place, the 25-year-old centre-back will sign his new contract with the blaugrana next week, adds the journalist.

This is a big step in the right direction for Barcelona considering Araujo has been one of the club’s best players in recent seasons.

Having recently returned from a long injury layoff, the defender has looked very good in his limited appearances and is expected to play a prominent role in Hansi Flick’s plans.

Therefore, getting his contract renewed, at a time when he had less than 18 months left on his contract, is a great boost for the present and future of Barcelona.

Araujo’s new deal is expected to include a sizeable pay rise for the defender along with a release clause that will be reasonable if he decides to move on in the future, rather than the €1 billion that existed previously.
