Barcelona successfully stopped Ronald Araujo’s immediate transfer to Juventus. The Uruguayan defender had decided to leave during this winter transfer market and had even confided his intentions to some teammates.
These teammates tried to persuade him to reconsider his decision, especially after Barcelona’s Super Cup victory over Real Madrid. Everything revolved around an argument between Araujo and the club.
The conversation was led by Deco, the blaugrana sports director, who managed to convince the player to pause his plans to leave immediately.
Two key arguments were fundamental: first, that the offer proposed by Juventus was insufficient, and second, that the team urgently needed his presence due to Íñigo Martínez’s injury, which will keep him out for a month.
Deco’s main objective was to avoid Araujo’s departure during this winter transfer market and, for now, he has partially achieved this.
The 25-year-old will not leave in the coming days, which is a great relief for Barça, taking into account that Martínez is injured and Andreas Christensen is still waiting for a medical discharge.
A lucrative offer could change everything
However, according to MARCA, despite Deco’s intervention, there is no guarantee that Araujo will remain at Barcelona until the end of January.
In addition to Juventus, Arsenal have also shown interest in the player and, if a significant offer arrives, the Catalans could consider selling him.
Although selling is not the club’s intention (they have always supported the Uruguayan’s continuity), the club recognizes that his agents have been evasive in recent months, giving little indication that Araujo really wants to stay. Therefore, any major offers will be reviewed.
Renewal negotiations are on hold
Contrary to what is circulating, Deco’s conversation with Araujo did not address the renewal of his contract. Talks on a new agreement remain completely stalled.
Tuesday’s meeting was focused solely on preventing his immediate departure, a goal that has been achieved. However, beyond this, all possibilities remain open and no progress has been made regarding his long-term future at the club.
Barcelona now waits to see how the situation develops as the transfer window nears its end.
