The news of Ronald Araujo’s possible departure is gaining momentum in Barcelona and it is safe to say that the Uruguayan has never been closer to leaving the club.
The centre-back, after all, was the undisputed starter and captain of the club even just 12 months ago and it is shocking to see him at the starting gate. However, that’s what six months out of action can do to a player.
While Araujo was non-transferable for Barcelona, the rise of Pau Cubarsi and Íñigo Martínez, first as individual players and as a pair, was enough to move him down the pecking order. Now, his future is uncertain.
Only two non-transferable names
As conveyed in a recent update of Sports WorldBarcelona only considers Cubarsi and Martínez as non-transferable centre-backs in the squad.
In fact, Hansi Flick has countless resources in the department, from Ronald Araujo to Andreas Christensen and Eric García, all players capable of being regular starters.
In fact, the coach is against any of the names leaving the club, as he highly values the depth of the department in the face of such a hectic schedule ahead.
The club’s financial situation, however, forces the club to rethink its position and the Blaugranas have declared García, Christensen and Araujo transferable.
Notably, Jules Kounde is also likely to be on the non-transferable list, but has been excluded from the category because he has established himself as a first-choice right-back rather than a centre-back.
The door is open for all three players to leave in January, but the club will work to ensure at least two stay to give depth to the department.
Everything indicates that Araujo will be the one chosen to leave, especially if he does not start against Real Madrid.
The Uruguayan has options to sign for Juventus or the Premier League this month while García is on Girona’s radar. Christensen, who has not yet received the medical green light, could stay until the summer.
