A recent report from SPORT has highlighted the inconsistency in how Barcelona perceive sanctions in football, particularly in regards to Vinicius Jr.’s actions during a match against Valencia, which has resulted on a two-match ban.
The Barcelona board finds this disparity in judgment difficult to ignore, especially when compared to previous incidents, including one involving Robert Lewandowski.
During the match played at Mestalla, Vinicius was sent off after hitting Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski. It was a clear act of aggression, which occurred when the ball was not in play.
Under normal circumstances, such a violent act would have warranted a ban of between 4 and 12 matches, reflecting the seriousness of the incident.
However, referee César Soto Grado’s report did not include any reference to this crucial detail, significantly downplaying the situation.
In addition, the report also softened the description of Vinicius’ confrontation with the referee after his expulsion, which, in other cases, could have led to an even more severe punishment.
Impartial? Maybe it’s like that…
The Competition Committee, aware of the vague language of the referee’s report, chose to impose the minimum possible sanction.
This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly among those in Barcelona, who see a glaring inconsistency in the way disciplinary actions are handled.
By contrast, just two seasons ago, Robert Lewandowski was facing a three-match ban for a relatively minor incident.
The Polish striker had been sent off for two yellow cards against Osasuna, but it was an alleged gesture – touching his nose – that earned him an additional two-match suspension for what was considered a lack of respect towards the referee.
The ambiguity of Lewandowski’s gesture did not prevent the authorities from applying a harsher sanction, leaving Barcelona confused about the reasoning behind these contrasting decisions.
From Barcelona’s perspective, it is difficult to understand how a violent act like Vinicius’ received a lighter sanction than a questionable gesture from Lewandowski.
This raises questions about the consistency and fairness of disciplinary measures in Spanish football, especially when it comes to key players and high-profile incidents.
