Babar Azam ends Test drought with fifty against South Africa

Pakistan’s star batsman Babar Azam ended his long dry spell in Test cricket with a hard-fought half-century during the first Test against South Africa. Playing for Centurion, the former captain showed determination before falling for an 85-ball 50, becoming Marco Jansen’s victim. This marked Babar’s first Test fifty since December 2022, breaking a streak of 19 innings without reaching the fifty-run mark.

Babar Azam ends Test drought after 733 days

Babar’s call came after 733 long days of struggle in red-ball cricket. His last significant Test score was a century against New Zealand two years ago. Since then, the prolific batsman’s form declined, with no more than fifty runs scored in 19 innings. Saturday’s fifty came off 80 deliveries and featured nine boundaries, providing a ray of hope for Pakistan’s batting order. However, his dismissal shortly after reaching the milestone left fans disappointed.

2024 has been a challenging year for Babar Azam with the bat. In five Tests this year, he managed only 202 runs at a dismal average of 20.20. He was even dropped from the team when Pakistan faced England at home. Therefore, this century comes at a crucial time for the former Pakistan captain.

However, Babar’s testing numbers are quite impressive. In 56 Tests, he amassed 4,051 runs at an average of over 43. This includes nine centuries and 27 fifties. Away from home, he has amassed 1,934 runs in 32 Tests at an average of 36+, with 16 half-centuries and two centuries. Against South Africa, Babar now has 397 runs at an average of 33.08, including four fifties. These numbers reflect both his consistency and his areas of improvement.

South Africa’s left-arm pacer Marco Jansen ensured that Babar’s innings did not progress. His gruff speech forced an edge, and Babar’s frustration was evident as he walked back to the pavilion. For South Africa, this opportunity came at a crucial time, tipping the balance in its favor.
