KIEV.- Ukraine brought the war to the heart of Russia this Saturday with drone attacks that damaged residential buildings in the city of Kazan, in the Tatarstan region, more than 1000 kilometers from the front line.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that Kazan had been attacked by three waves of drones between 7:40 and 9:20 this Saturday. This Saturday’s attacks, which Ukraine did not recognize in accordance with its security policy, come after another Ukrainian attack on Friday against a city in the Russian border region of Kursk with missiles supplied by the United States killed six people, including a child.
The attack also occurs on the day that commemorates the birth of Joseph Stalin, the strongman of the Soviet Union who led the communist state for three decades.
Moscow, for its part, sent a barrage of 113 drones to Ukraine on Friday night. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, 57 drones were shot down during the attacks. Another 56 drones were “lost,” likely due to being electronically jammed.
The governor of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said that eight people were injured on Friday night in drone strikes against the regional capital, also called Kharkiv.
