The Barcelona veteran is likely to start from the youth squad in the Super Cup final against Real Madrid

One of the biggest doubts surrounding Barcelona’s lineup for the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid on Sunday is who will start in goal.

According Sports WorldWojciech Szczesny is emerging as the main candidate to take Iñaki Peña’s place in Barcelona’s goal, after his excellent performance in the semi-final against Athletic Club last Wednesday.

Szczesny, who came to Barcelona as an emergency signing, made his debut on January 4 in a Copa del Rey match against Barbastro, where he kept a clean sheet.

He followed up with another great performance in Jeddah against Athletic, showing why he could surpass Pena in the final.

Earlier today, Flick confirmed that the The Masia The graduate’s absence from the semi-final lineup was due to him arriving late for a training session on the day of the match. And when the opportunity presented itself, Szczesny made the most of it.

Indeed, the Polish veteran left a significant mark against Athletic Club in a much more demanding match than his debut against Barbastro.

The former Juventus player showed exceptional composure and reliability. He was accurate when it came to stopping shots and exuded confidence when playing out from the back, a crucial attribute for Barcelona’s style of play, which often leaves large spaces behind the defence.

Szczesny handled these challenges smoothly, solidifying his case to start in the final against Real Madrid.

As such, as things stand, the former Arsenal and Juventus star looks set to start his third consecutive game for Barcelona.
