Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has once again failed in a re-evaluation of his bowling action. The latest test, conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Sciences in Chennai, confirmed that Shakib’s action does not comply with the legal limits set by the International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, his current suspension from bowling remains in effect.
Shakib’s suspension is a huge blow for Bangladesh, especially with the Champions Trophy just a month away. While the 37-year-old remains eligible to play as a specialist batsman, his absence as a pitcher leaves a significant gap in the team’s plans.
Suspension details
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) issued a statement addressing Shakib’s situation.
“The player’s existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following the initial independent assessment at Loughborough University in the UK also remains in place. A successful re-assessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted,” reads the statement, cited by ESPNcricinfo.
Shakib’s bowling action first came under scrutiny in September last year during a county championship match between Surrey and Somerset. The referees reported his action, prompting the all-rounder to undergo tests.
Failed tests and bowling ban
Shakib underwent his first bowling action evaluation at Loughborough University in the United Kingdom, but did not meet the required standards. Consequently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned him from bowling in all competitions organized by the board.
The ICC extended the ban to all domestic and international competitions organized by its member boards. This ruling has kept Shakib out of action as a bowler in both formats of the game.
Despite his ongoing suspension, Shakib attempted to clear his name through the re-evaluation process in Chennai. However, failing the test means he is banned from bowling.
Impact on Bangladesh Champions Trophy campaign
Shakib’s continued suspension is a huge setback for Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy campaign. The veteran all-rounder has been a crucial part of the team’s success over the years, both with bat and ball.
Without Shakib’s bowling services, Bangladesh will have to rely heavily on their other bowling options. The team’s management is likely to make adjustments to compensate for his absence in the attack.
Shakib’s controversial year
2024 was a turbulent year for Shakib, marked by controversies both on and off the field. His involvement as a Member of Parliament in the Bangladesh Awami League government drew criticism, particularly during the widespread protests in July and August.
Shakib’s political commitments affected his availability for the national team. He missed several key series, including the farewell Test match against South Africa at Mirpur. Protests for and against his role in politics took place on the outskirts of Dhaka, increasing tension.
The all-rounder also missed Bangladesh’s ODI series against Afghanistan and the West Indies, further limiting his cricket appearances.
