It’s been almost two weeks since the January transfer window opened and we’re ready to see the first big move of the trading period.
PSG are set to sign Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, a former FC Barcelona target, and the Italian club’s coach Antonio Conte confirmed that the player has asked to leave.
According to SPORT, PSG will pay 70 million euros plus another 10 million in variables to acquire the Georgian winger in the coming days.
Although the Parisians are taking away one of Barcelona’s options to reinforce the left wing in the near future, they are also hindering the Catalans’ immediate signing plans.
Napoli will look for Marcus Rashford
In fact, according to the aforementioned SPORT report, Napoli will now look for Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford, a player Barcelona want to sign in the current window, to replace Kvaratskhelia.
Barça has the 27-year-old English player as its priority for this month and is studying a loan, with a meeting already held with his agent.
However, Napoli’s interest is likely to complicate Barcelona’s hopes of securing a loan deal for the Manchester United striker.
For Rashford, a step forward Neapolitans could present the opportunities he is currently lacking at Manchester United. He would have a key role in the team, filling the void left by Kvaratskhelia and helping Napoli in the race for the Serie A title, which they currently lead.
It is also claimed that Rashford would welcome the opportunity to reunite with his former Manchester United teammate Scott McTominay, who is now a vital player for Napoli.
Barcelona can offer the UCL
While Napoli may have several advantages in their pursuit of Rashford, they also face significant challenges.
Chief among them is the absence of European football this season, while Barcelona are well positioned in the UEFA Champions League. The prestigious tournament offers Rashford the opportunity to showcase his talents on a continental stage.
In financial terms, Napoli, Barcelona and AC Milan – another interested party – operate under similar parameters.
Rashford reportedly does not prioritize monetary gains, and his loan would involve covering the remaining salary for the season, approximately €3 million net.
However, Manchester United could also be a factor in the equation, taking advantage of the potential €80 million windfall for Napoli from the sale of Kvaratskhelia.
They may demand a permanent transfer fee or include an option to buy for Rashford, valued at around €55m.
